Summary:
The Coot is a stocky charcoal black water bird. It has a white bill that extends back to shield the front of the head. It has grey green legs and large feet. The Coot is similar in size and habit to the closely related Moorhen.
Ecology:
Near freshwater, rivers, lakes and pond: also estuaries. Feeds mainly on plant material, but will also eat vertebrates. Nest in vegetation, either on or close to water.

Distribution:
Widespread species. Absent from upland areas.
