Summary:

The Snipe is a wading bird with a very long straight bill. The upper parts have black and brown mottled patterning. The underside is paler with Y-shaped markings on the breast. A pale eye stripe runs above the eye and the crown has a dark stripes. The green legs are quite long.

Ecology:

Snipes form quite large flocks but are evenly distributed. They feed in wetland areas on invertebrates such as insects and worms.

Habitat:

Marshland, moorland.

Distribution:

Widespread throughout the British Isles except Highland Scotland
